Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Character.AI: What Each One Is Actually For

·5 min read

Every few weeks someone posts the same question: which AI chat site is best? The replies are always a list of names, and the list is always useless, because these products are not competing for the same job.

Below is what each one is actually built to do, written by people who build one of them. Where a competitor is the right answer, it says so — you can check that against the rest and decide how much to trust it.

Janitor AI — the character library

Janitor is closest in spirit to old-school forum roleplay: enormous numbers of user-made character cards, minimal restriction, and an expectation that you will bring your own model or API key for the good stuff.

Pick it if you want breadth and control, you enjoy browsing cards, and you do not mind that quality varies wildly from one to the next because a stranger wrote the prompt.

Skip it if you want to open an app and have someone be consistently themselves without any setup. The variance is the price of the volume.

SpicyChat — the unfiltered one

SpicyChat's proposition is straightforward: adult content is the point, from the first message, without any story required to earn it. It gets a remarkable amount of traffic from a comparatively small set of keywords, which tells you the intent behind those searches is extremely specific.

Pick it if you want explicit content immediately and do not want a relationship arc in the way.

Skip it if the anticipation is the part you actually enjoy. Removing every obstacle also removes the thing obstacles create.

Character.AI — the mainstream one

The biggest by a wide margin, with millions of user-made characters and by far the most polished onboarding. It is also the strictest: the filter interrupts scenes that were never heading anywhere explicit, which is the single most common reason people go looking for alternatives.

Pick it if you want to talk to a specific fictional character, a historical figure, or somebody's original creation from a fandom. Nothing else has that catalogue.

Skip it if you want continuity. It has no persistent memory between sessions, which is why "why does it forget everything" is one of the most-asked questions about it. We wrote about what that costs to fix properly, and about what a real alternative has to get right.

The trade-off in one image: a written roster instead of millions, each one written and rendered rather than submitted. Vera plays cello in Vienna. Mateo tends bar in Madrid and remembers your order. Naomi is a forensic pathologist and unshockable. Ezra tattoos in Brooklyn.

DreamOria — the one we build

A fixed cast of written characters rather than a library, persistent memory rather than a context window, and adult content that unlocks as the relationship progresses rather than being available or unavailable globally. She can send voice messages, generate photos, and call your phone.

Pick it if you want one person to know you over months, and you would rather the escalation be part of the story than a setting.

Skip it if you want variety, you want to build bots for other people, or you want everything unlocked in the first five minutes. All three of those are legitimate wants, and three other products serve them better.

The actual decision

Strip the marketing away and there are only two questions.

Do you want a catalogue or a person? A catalogue is breadth — thousands of characters, none of whom will remember you. A person is depth — one continuous relationship, no browsing. Almost every complaint about every product in this category comes from someone who bought one and wanted the other.

Do you want the obstacle or not? Some people want the anticipation; some people find it tedious. Both are fine. But they point at different products, and no amount of feature comparison will reconcile them.

Sloane owns the bar and the room. Kai does everything at the speed of the sea. Neither is browsable, and that is the entire trade.

Things worth checking before you commit

  • Can you export your chat history? You are about to spend months on this. Find out now whether you can leave with it.
  • Has the company changed character behaviour retroactively? The answer lives in their subreddit, not their changelog. It has happened before, at scale.
  • Is the free tier limited by messages or by memory? Message caps are annoying. Memory caps mean you are testing a fundamentally different product from the paid one.
  • Who is paying? A product you pay for can afford to remain the product you paid for.
