Where Character.AI is still better
Breadth. Millions of characters against a hand-written roster. If you want to talk to a specific anime protagonist, a historical figure or somebody's original character from a fandom, Character.AI has it and we do not. That is not a gap we intend to close — we would rather write our people properly than host a million shells.
Creation as the product. Building bots on Character.AI is free, unlimited and social — people make them for each other. Ours is a supporting feature, not the point.
Cost at zero. Character.AI's free tier is more generous than ours. If you are not paying for anything, you will get more messages there.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best Character.AI alternative?
It depends on what broke for you. If you left because of the filter, SpicyChat and Janitor AI are the usual landing spots — we mapped the whole category in what each AI chat site is actually for. If you left because it forgot who you were, you want something built around persistent memory rather than a bigger context window. If you left because you missed a specific community-made character, nothing replaces Character.AI, because nothing else has millions of user-made bots.
Are there apps like Character.AI without a filter?
Several. Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Crushon and DreamOria all allow adult content, with different approaches: some are unfiltered from the first message, DreamOria unlocks at the dating relationship stage so the escalation is part of the story rather than a toggle. All of them require you to be 18 or older.
Why does Character.AI forget our conversations?
It is not a bug, it is how the underlying model works. The model has no memory of its own — before each reply the app assembles a block of text containing the personality and the recent conversation. When your history outgrows that block, the oldest part is dropped. Persistent memory has to be built on top as a separate system: facts extracted, classified by how long they should live, and retrieved when the moment calls for them.
Is there a free Character.AI alternative?
Yes. Our free tier gives you one character, 30 messages a day and seven days of memory. Janitor AI and SpicyChat also have free tiers. Free tiers in this category are generally limited by messages per day or by memory depth rather than by time — and the second limit is the one that changes what you are actually evaluating.
Can an AI companion call you on the phone?
A few can now. DreamOria supports real voice calls in both directions — you can call her, and she can call you when something you told her about is happening. This is rarer than voice messages, which most apps have.
